Abstract

This study aims to investigate the level of speaking anxiety experienced by tenth grade students at SMKN 01 OKU. This study used close-ended questions method. The population of this study was 108 tenth grade students in SMKN01 OKU. The researcher used quota sampling method which according to feedback received. The data was collected through questionnaire with paper form as an intermediary application. It consist 21 statements with 6 factors causes of anxiety namely: Gender, Negative Self-Perception or Self-esteem, Fear of Making Mistakes, Social Status, Cultural Differences, Social Environment and Language Limited. The researcher used five points of Likert Scale for analyzing the data. The data showed that most of students (82 students) experienced a moderate level of anxiety when overcome speaking skill, also this study showed that 22 students got Low Level of anxiety which is the score is 75 – 97 (≤99), 82 students got moderate level of anxiety which the score is 99 – 130(99 – 132), and 4 students got high level of anxiety which is the score is 133, 141, 144, and 165 (≥132). Students’ speaking anxiety are influenced by 4 factor causes of anxiety; which are Gender, Negative Self-perception or Self-esteem, fear of making mistake, and social environment and language limited. Furthermore, analyzing students’ speaking anxiety can offer valuable insights and it can provide an avenue to deepen understanding of psychological factors affecting learning outcomes. Additionally, identifying and addressing speaking anxiety can enhance students’ overall communication skills and confidence, preparing them for success in academic and professional settings.
