Abstract

This purpose of this research was to find out the error in pronouncing English fricative sounds made by English education students in Bsaturaja University. This research aims to percentage of students’ error and the kinds of students’ error in pronouncing English fricative sounds. The researcher utilized a descriptive qualitative research design in this research. To collect data, the reearcher took 72 students from fourth, sixth, and eight semester in the academic year 2021/2022. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling. The technique for collecting data was pronunciation test. The pronunciation test used in this research consisted of 29 test sound of English fricatives (which includes nine English fricative
sounds) in 15 sentences. To analyze the data obtained, researcher used the Elsa Speak Application in the smartphone. Elsa Speak is used to see the sounds that students pronounced. The percentage number of pronunciation errors of English fricative sounds are as follow: /f/ 0%, /v/ of 22%, /h/ 0%, /z/ 33%, /s/ 43%, /ð/
22%, /θ/ 42%, /ʃ/ 23%, and /ʒ/ 15%. The result revealed that substitution and omission are the most common types of pronunciation error that occurred among Englsih education students. Where 89% that occurred due to substitution errors and 11% in omission errors.
