STUDENTS’MOTIVATIONINSTUDYINGENGLISHATTHE EIGHTH GRADE OF MTS HARINKA

This research discussed about Students’ Motivation in Learning English at the Eighth of MTs Harinka, Prabumulih. The problem of the research that the students had low desire and enthusiasm in learning especially learning English. The purpose was to know what kind students’ dominant motivation and to found out how was the students’ motivation level in learning English at the Eighth Grade of MTs Harinka, Prabumulih. So, some of the students did not enjoy with learning English. The aim of this research was to analysis students’ motivation in learning English at grade the Eighth Grade of MTs Harinka, Prabumulih. The kind of this research was quantitative research where the method was descriptive method. The population of this research was eighth grade of MTs Harinka, Prabumulih. The sample of this research 40 students. The researher took the sample by using simple random sampling. To collect the data, the researcher used questionnaire and interview to know students’ motivation in learning English. Then, to analyzed the data, the researcher used the SPSS, Microsoft Excel, and a five point likert scale as motivation level measurement. At the result of this research, the researcher found that the total score of students’ intrinsic motivation was 1671, the mean score was 4,1175. The total score of students’ extrinsic motivation was 1619 and the mean score was 4,0475. The researher found that there were 34 students had high motivation and 6 students had moderate motivation which the total mean score was 4,1125. Therefore, in average the students have moderate level of motivation, based on the interpretation from the total score (4,1125) of Five-Point Likert scale. The students’ motivation dominant in learning English was intrinsic motivation which the total score was 4,1175 as a high degree motivation.
